Christ The Cornerstone of our Church

“….For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (I Corinthians 3:11)
One day, Jesus asked His disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” and Simon Peter, probably without batting an eyelid said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus answered him and said, “Blessed are you Simon… And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:13 – 18)
Jesus was indeed very happy with Simon Peter’s answer and it is on this premise that a church was built-up and stands until today, growing and seeping into every nook and cranny on earth. We do not need to go into an extensive historic detour to understand the origins of the church. The message is quite simple. Church originated in Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.
The foundation of the early church was not laid on a wealth of resources or an extensive architectural plan but through the message of a wavering fisherman from Galilee, who filled with the Holy Spirit preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ and three thousand people believed. The same Gospel was introduced to the gentiles through a man who fiercely persecuted believers. The Church was not built on perfect, righteous or sinless people but by the Hand of the Lord (Acts 11: 19) among Jews and gentiles alike and thus, Christians were born through a great number of people assembled, willing to listen and learn from the teachings of apostles rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His Resurrection. (Acts 11:19-26)
Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the household of God with the apostles and prophets as the foundation. (Ephesians 2:19, 20) What our church needs today more than ever before is to keep Jesus Christ at the center of our worship. He is the sole focus of the church and on Him our church will stand no matter the winds and waves, no matter the trials and tribulations, no matter the dissensions, even the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it!
